On the way, Rumi answers the questions Robbie had asked her. Rumi realizes that she is in love with Robbie and Vicky was never the "husband material" she was looking for. The next day, Robbie files for an annulment. When confronted, Robbie confesses that he loves Rumi but she and Vicky deserve each other. Robbie, realising that Rumi has cheated on him, gets heartbroken. Robbie, suspiciously, follows Rumi and ends up seeing her with Vicky. She ends up sleeping with Vicky the next day.
He still reminds her that she has a choice. One day, Vicky shows up to tell Robbie about him and Rumi, she tells Robbie that she wants to stay married to him. She gradually starts getting comfortable with Robbie. Robbie and Rumi get married the next day. Rumi accepts the proposal but the night before the wedding, refuses to marry, believing Vicky has changed. However, nervous and immature, Vicky repeatedly gets cold feet.Įventually, she gives up on him and agrees to an arranged marriage with a mature and responsible banker, Robbie ( Abhishek Bachchan). Rumi promises her family that Vicky will come with his parents to ask for her hand in marriage and if he doesn't show up, she will marry whomever her family chooses. One day they are caught by Rumi’s family and pressure builds for them to get married. Even if you don’t watch this film, you must listen to the excellent song “Ishq Bulaava”. I saw Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Hasee Toh Phasee back to back and Hasee Toh Phasee was far more enjoyable. Both Siddharth and Parineeti did a great job in this film. I suggest overlooking the inconsistencies in Parineeti’s character in the second half. So I don’t mind that many of Bollywood rom-coms are fairy tales.
Plus, we only have films to get away from the bitter realities of life. In true life, such incidents are near impossible but I’m certainly not going to suddenly expect realism from Bollywood. It’s a world where he can choose her over what’s more attractive. It’s a world where a handsome guy with a beautiful fiancee can fall for an odd geek. It is a world where some of the social norms that we live in are different. There is also a different worldview in Hasee Toh Phasee. I suppose the writer tried to explain that with her use of antidepressants but I did not find this sudden transformation very realistic or convincing. But in the second half of the film, the character becomes a completely “normal” woman as though touched by a magic wand. Parineeti’s portrayal was quite impressive complete with the “crazy eyes” and odd mimics with her mouth. In the beginning of the film, Parineeti’s character is established as a quirky and eccentric girl who may even have some serious health problems. The only shortcoming of the film is the inconsistent performance of Parineeti Chopra but I place that responsibility on the director than the actor.
I must say that I was surprised because contrary to the average marketing of the film which gives the impression that this is just another routine romantic comedy, Hasee Toh Phasee has content and uniqueness. The only reason I watched it now was due to the positive reviews and comments. Hasee Toh Phasee didn’t seem promising on either front and so I avoided the film when it released. I often make the sole decision to watch a film based on the cast and the posters. I usually don’t have the time and intention to watch teasers and trailers. Hasee Toh Phasee’s unimaginative poster does not do justice to the film which is surprisingly a good watch.
